The Great Horned One - Acrylic Painting

I have always wanted to paint an owl.  We were fortunate to come across a great horned owl during our trip to Yellowstone National Park this summer. What a beautiful creature !! It looked like a chubby baby with two piggy tails. Here is the photo that I took.

My artist mind has recently started rebelling against realism. So I have been doing lot of painting that involves fewer brush stokes to get the details. This owl painting is done in such style with acrylic on a 8 X 8 Canvas.

Hello Sunshine !!

Sunshine err Sunflowers everywhere.. How can any artist resist painting them ? During my lunch run to SFO Ferry building few weeks ago, farmers market was in full swing and I saw this gorgeous sunflower bunch sitting on a table. Clicked it on my iphone thinking it will make a good reference someday.

After a particularly stressful week at work, I needed some cheering up and chose to paint this today. I didn't want to get bogged down by details. Decided to keep it loose and have fun with it. I am pretty happy with how it turned out. Hope you like it too :)

Winter Light - Acrylic Painting

I have been working on some potraits and bigger paintings that demands too much detail and focus. I wanted to try something fun in between and not worry about making mistakes. And this is the result. Inspired by photos and paintings of many winter scenes that I have come across. Done impasto style with the knife from start to finish on a 20 x 20 canvas.

Golden Gate Regatta - Acrylic Painting

I cannot get enough of painting Golden Gate. This one is inspired by the pictures from the  regatta race that we have every year by the gate. I was sitting with this for quite a while which I think is now finished. Acrylic painting on a 18 X 24 canvas.

Three Kittens - Acrylic Painting

Kittens have been on my painting wishlist for a while now. I started on this last month. But the kittens that I saw at our local animal shelter last week motivated me to finish this painting :). Hope you like it .

Coyote Hills Plein Air

Sorry for being MIA for a while. Past two months have been crazy at work and I am trying hard to keep up my painting schedule. I did manage to squeeze in sometime to go for the 4th Annual Plein Air paintout organized by East Bay parks last month at Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont. There were about 15-20 artists. It was a gorgeous day and I chose to paint the marsh. Took me about 2 hours to finish the painting below.

Done on a 11X14 Canvas with Watersoluble oil.

The Egrets kept darting in & out of my frame and I couldn't resist including them in the painting :). Here is a closeup of them.

Tomato Dreams - Oil Painting

Tomatoes and I go way back. I grew up with tomato plants. I remember one particular year in which we had so many of them it almost looked like a tomato forest. My vegetable hating younger brother was so overwhelmed by it and started excecuting the plants and tomatoes behind my mom's back. Boy, she was NOT happy..

While I don't have such a grand garden anymore, I still keep two tomato plants every year and they yield pretty good during summer. This year me and my daughter planted some early girl tomatoes and they are already flowering and has some baby tomatoes. We are dreaming shiny tomatoes :)

Done on a 12 X 12 canvas with water soluble oil

Gamble Tulips - Acrylic Painting

Here is a happy little painting of the spring tulips from Elizabeth Gamble Garden in Palo Alto. I love this garden and try to get here atleast couple of times in a year. They have a cute gazebo and best planted seasonal flowers all done by the volunteers. While it is not as big as Filoli garden, it is very charming and has always been one of my favorites.

Done on a 11 X 14 Canvas with acrylic. The tulips and some parts of the tree are painted impasto style with knifes. The rest were with brush. The intention was not to do a detailed one like I usually do but to paint loose and have fun with it which I sure had. Hope you like it :)

Pink Pacific - Oil Painting

Happy Earthday !! Hope you were able to enjoy something natural, something earthy, something outside today. I wanted to go out and do some plein air painting today to celebrate earth in my own way. Didn't quite workout, so I chose to finish this painting that I started some time last year.

This one is based on a photograph that I took during my visit to Carmel on a clear spring day. Pink ice plants carpets the Pacific Grove area in Carmel every spring and provides a stunning contrast to the blue ocean. Initially I wasn't sure if this is the composition that I wanted - I felt the rock was more distracting and took away the emphasis from the ice plants. After looking at it few months now, I think now I have grown to like the rock. :). So , here is the finished painting..

Done on a 11 X 14 Canvas with water soluble oil.

T-Stormed Valley - Oil Painting

Sorry haven't updated the blog in a while. I have been painting but in a much sloooower phase. Here is a large format painting that I started in January. This was sitting on a easel in my living room for couple of weeks now. After hearing "Looks done, why are you still working on this ?" from family and the visitors alike, I have decided to sign the painting on this fine Sunday :).

T-Stormed Valley painting is based on a photo that I took in Yosemite amidst thunder sorms last fall. Done on a 24 X 36 canvas with water soluble oil. Mostly done with brush and some knife strokes. Hope you like it..

Here are details on the painting.
